About on hearing a familiar melody, ghost is elevated

The first time I heard a familiar melody and became elevated, I was 14 and I’d just got a job at the local hairdressing salon. I was full of big ideas, like “washing the towels after every use,” which proved surprisingly controversial. My first shift was a hazing from the girls who worked there - there’s something incredibly bitchy about the a tiny salon with not enough work and too many mirrors. The radio was set to 96.4 The Eagle. Just towards end of my shift, Coldplay’s CLOCKS came on. It’s one of about 3 songs I can play on the piano. One part of me was tethered and the other part was lifted, far far far above all that petty chaos. At that moment I knew I’d be able to handle anything.

About GHOST DRESS

One of the most difficult parts of writing Sanatorium (2020) was describing the sensation of out-of-body experience. Eventually, I ran out of words and ended up going into my studio late at night, with a haunted nightgown. While the images didn’t make it into the book, they helped me shape the language of floating, lightness and climbing out of my own skin.

In the end, the haunted dress in the photo shoot developed its own character and identity beyond Sanatorium. Ghost Dress is tense and awkward. She arrives at parties at the wrong time and hovers in the hallway, waiting for a stranger to catch her eye. It takes her a long time to muster enough energy to enjoy herself, but when she does she quickly becomes so elevated, she thinks she will never find the floor again. When she falls, it is hard to remember she was ever full of air…
