Shapeshift Baby Shapeshift (2024) - original work
Shapeshift baby Shapeshift is a tiny pastel and acrylic work that arrived as thick and sudden as a slug after rain. I wanted to capture the movement and the transformation of slug bodies in quick, shapeshifting lines. I think sticky oil pastel particularly suits the slug body: it is viscous, and shapeshifting, just like the slugs.
The title comes from a line in my book SLUGS: a Manifesto.
This work forms part of my series slugspaceslug: a series of small works on paper and card made in crip time, during a period of winter hibernation. Each piece explores the physics of becoming slug-like: slugs bend into strange and unusual places, or spill over into spaces in which they don't belong. I have used the series to experiment with different forms: some are messy and unkempt, others are sharper and try to behave
