About Ghost Arrives at a Party too Early, waits for a Stranger to Catch Her Eye
She drinks too quickly, desperate for something to do with her hands. In her head, she practices the lines she’s pretty sure she’s going to fumble: “excuse me, do you know where I can find the kitchen/ more wine / the bathroom?” She floats back and forth between these locations, hoping that the stranger she eventually asks doesn’t notice that she’s clearly learned her way around already. Her glass is empty again. She waits for somebody to notice that she’s got a question.

About GHOST DRESS
One of the most difficult parts of writing Sanatorium (2020) was describing the sensation of out-of-body experience. Eventually, I ran out of words and ended up going into my studio late at night, with a haunted nightgown. While the images didn’t make it into the book, they helped me shape the language of floating, lightness and climbing out of my own skin.
In the end, the haunted dress in the photo shoot developed its own character and identity beyond Sanatorium. Ghost Dress is tense and awkward. She arrives at parties at the wrong time and hovers in the hallway, waiting for a stranger to catch her eye. It takes her a long time to muster enough energy to enjoy herself, but when she does she quickly becomes so elevated, she thinks she will never find the floor again. When she falls, it is hard to remember she was ever full of air…
